As part of our ongoing efforts to keep Sheltairâs systems and data secure, IT regularly reviews security alerts that help us identify potential risks before they become problems.
One common best-practice reminder we want to share is around password storage.
â Avoid Storing Passwords in Files
Storing passwords in documents, spreadsheets, notes, or text files (even for convenience) can create unnecessary risk. If a device is ever lost, compromised, or accessed by the wrong person, those files can expose sensitive systems and accounts.
â What You Should Do Instead
- Do not store passwords in Word documents, Excel files, PDFs, or text notes
- Never save passwords on shared drives or network folders
- Use a secure password manager to store and manage credentials safely
- Enable unique passwords for different systems whenever possible
