Windows – Fix Sound or Audio Problems
Purpose – This article will provide instructions on how to resolve common sound or audio issues in Windows.
Scope – This article will cover the standard sound output and mixer settings commonly associated with sound/audio issues.
Check speaker output in Windows settings
If multiple audio output devices are available, check that you have the appropriate one selected:
- Left-click on the Speakers icon on the bottom-right taskbar.
- Next, select the arrow to the right of the speaker volume slider to open a list of audio devices connected to your computer. The tool tip should display as Select a sound output when hovering over the arrow.
- Check that your audio is playing to the audio device you prefer, such as a speaker or headphones.
Check sound and mixer settings
Scrolling further down from the Output device settings in the image referenced above, you will find the Volume mixer settings where you can individually control the volume level for system sounds and any other applications currently open. You can also click on the settings icon to the right of Volume mixer for additional settings, such as muting specific applications, and selecting specific input/output devices for a given application.
