Google Chrome – Disable Notifications
Purpose – This article provides instructions on how to disable browser notifications that are either unwanted (harmless) or misleading (fake virus).
Scope – The instructions provided strictly cover the Google Chrome desktop browser. However, the article contains a URL reference link that will also provide instructions on how to manage notifications on the Android or Apple mobile platforms.
How notifications work
By default, Chrome alerts you whenever a website, app, or extension wants to send you notifications. You can change this setting at any time.
When you browse sites with intrusive or misleading notifications, Chrome automatically blocks notifications and recommends you continue to block these notifications. However, some of these notifications may be labeled as false-negatives and still appear as Allowed.
Notification Settings
You can check your current Allowed notifications through your Google settings to either Block or Remove any unwanted notifications:
- At the top right of the Google Chrome browser, click on the 3 dots (
) and select Settings
- Navigate to Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications
- Review the sites listed under Allowed to send notifications and click on the 3 dots to the right of any notifications you wish to take action on
Note: It is recommended that you select Block rather than Remove for any intrusive/misleading notifications to avoid having them reappear through any subsequent website visits.
